Safe, Comfortable Ortho-K Wear in Singapore

When your child wears ortho-k (orthokeratology) lenses at The EyeClinic by Dr Cheryl Lee, you are never handed a box and sent home. As an eye doctor and myopia control specialist, I personally teach you and your child how to wear and care for the lenses, and I monitor your child's eye health at every visit. Our boutique clinic is built around unhurried, one-to-one care.

Two things matter most for long-term success: preventing infection and keeping the eyes comfortable.

Is ortho-k safe?

The safety profile of ortho-k is comparable to that of daytime reusable soft contact lenses. Good hygiene lowers the risk further, and a key part of this is keeping the eyelashes and lid margins clean. For this reason, I recommend a Blephex lid treatment every 6 to 12 months for ortho-k wearers.

What is Blephex?

Blephex is a medical-grade treatment in which a fine micro-sponge spins gently along the upper and lower lid margins. It removes excess bacteria, biofilm and debris from the lashes and lash follicles. A fresh, single-use sponge is used for each eye. The treatment is quick and comfortable, and many patients find their eyes feel noticeably fresher afterwards.

What does Blephex help with?

Blepharitis: inflammation of the eyelids, which become red, itchy, crusty and irritated when bacteria overgrow along the lid margins. What is Blepharitis?

Allergic eye disease: by cleaning allergens from the lashes, Blephex may help reduce one of the triggers of eye allergy symptoms. Read more on Allergic Eye Disease

Home Care: Clean Lashes Before Your Lenses Go In

Before inserting the lenses each night, gently clean the lash line with a lid wipe. This removes debris and bacteria that would otherwise sit against the lens.

To Prevent Dry Eyes and Styes

Wearing ortho-k lenses can make the eyes more prone to dryness. Dry eyes can cause discomfort and may increase the risk of eye infections and styes.

Why Eye Drops Are Not the Whole Answer

The tear film is made of water and oil. The oil layer, produced by the meibomian glands in the eyelids, slows the evaporation of tears. Lubricating eye drops bring temporary comfort, but they do not restore the oil layer. When the glands become blocked (meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD), tears evaporate too quickly. Blocked glands can also become inflamed and, if left untreated, may lead to styes.

MGD is one of the most common causes of dry eye. Treatment that unblocks the glands, such as Eye-Light®, can help improve dry eye symptoms for many patients.

Omega-3

I recommend that ortho-k wearers take an omega-3 supplement, available in [link: capsule or syrup form], as it may help support the quality of the tear oil. I will advise on the right form and amount for your child.

These simple precautions help make ortho-k wear safer and more comfortable for your child.
