What is convergence insufficiency?
When Your Eyes Don't Work Together
Convergence insufficiency is a common condition where the eyes have difficulty working together when looking at near objects, such as books, tablets or computers. Instead of turning inwards comfortably, one eye may drift slightly outward, making close work more difficult and tiring.
Children and adults with convergence insufficiency often have perfectly normal distance vision, which is why the condition can easily go unnoticed during a routine eye test.
What Is Convergence?
Whenever you read, write or use a digital device, your eyes must work as a team by turning inwards to focus on the same object. This movement is called convergence.
In people with convergence insufficiency, the eye muscles struggle to maintain this inward position for prolonged periods. As a result, the eyes become tired and symptoms develop during near work.
Common Symptoms
You may experience:
Eyestrain when reading
Headaches after close work
Blurred vision at near
Double vision while reading
Difficulty concentrating
Losing your place while reading
Words appearing to move on the page
Closing one eye while reading
Frequent rubbing of the eyes
Fatigue after school or computer work
Reduced reading endurance
Children may avoid reading altogether because it becomes uncomfortable rather than because they dislike books.
Who Can Be Affected?
Convergence insufficiency can occur in both children and adults.
It is commonly noticed in:
School-aged children
Teenagers
University students
Adults who spend long hours on computers
People returning to work after a concussion or head injury
Many children are unaware that what they are experiencing is unusual because they have never known anything different.
How Is Convergence Insufficiency Diagnosed?
A routine eyesight test alone may not detect convergence insufficiency.
During a comprehensive eye examination, Dr Cheryl Lee will assess how well your eyes work together, including:
Eye alignment
Near point of convergence
Eye movements
Focusing ability
Binocular vision
Stereopsis (depth perception)
These tests help determine whether your symptoms are caused by convergence insufficiency or another eye condition.
Treatment
The good news is that convergence insufficiency is often highly treatable.
Treatment may include:
Vision therapy exercises
Home convergence exercises
Prism glasses in selected cases
Correcting any underlying spectacle prescription
Managing associated dry eye symptoms if present
Regular review of progress
Treatment is individualised depending on your age, symptoms and examination findings.
Can Convergence Insufficiency Be Prevented?
Although convergence insufficiency cannot always be prevented, healthy visual habits may reduce symptoms:
Take regular breaks during reading and screen use.
Follow the 20-20-20 rule.
Ensure good lighting when reading.
Maintain a comfortable reading distance.
Encourage children to spend time outdoors and balance screen time with other activities.
Can convergence insufficiency occur together with myopia?
Yes. A child can have both myopia and convergence insufficiency. While glasses correct blurred distance vision, they do not treat problems with eye coordination. If a child continues to experience headaches, eyestrain or reading difficulties despite wearing the correct glasses, an assessment of binocular vision may be recommended.

Many children with convergence insufficiency are intelligent and eager to learn, but reading may become frustrating because their eyes tire quickly. Parents sometimes think their child has poor concentration or simply dislikes reading, when the real problem is that near work is uncomfortable.
A careful assessment of how the eyes work together can identify convergence insufficiency and guide appropriate treatment. Once recognised, many children experience improved comfort, reading endurance and confidence with schoolwork.
