When your OK lenses are from The Eye Clinic by Dr Cheryl Lee, your eye health including the control of myopia is supervised by a medical ophthalmologist and a myopia control optometrist. We take our roles very seriously.

We have all the weaponry of myopia control glasses , atropine eye drops, day and night contact lenses for the children and adults. If we prescribe you the OK lenses it is because we feel you would medically benefit from them for myopia control reasons or for medical and social factors.

The main reason patients stop using contact lenses is dry eyes and styes. Infections are not as common . We will discuss how to prevent these problems.

Things to watch out for when using OK lenses

Reasons for infection

Handwashing is not an issue we have encountered.. The infection actually comes from dirty eyelashes/blepharitis.

What is Blepharitis?

Blepharitis is when the eyelids become swollen and red, leading to itching and irritation. It happens because of too many bacteria on the eyelid edges and can affect anyone. A microscope can be used to take a picture of your eyelashes to show blepharitis. Crusty eyelids, known as "bak sai" or "yan shi," are a common sign of this condition.

What is Demodex?

Demodex is a mite in eyelash follicles that consumes skin oil. Research indicates that 44% of blepharitis patients have Demodex which increases with age.

Infection

The rate of infection is low of about 7 in 10,000 wearers, but this is preventable. We have not had cases at The Eye Clinic by Dr Cheryl Lee but we are particular about hygiene and habits.

What Is Blephex?

It is a cleaning with a medical grade micro-sponge that spins thoroughly and carefully along your upper and lower lid margins to remove excess bacteria, biofilm and toxins from your lashes and lash follicles. The single used micro-sponge is disposable and is changed after cleaning each eye. Very much the same idea as a cleaning of your teeth by the dentist, fortunately much more pleasant.

At home, we would suggest you clean your eyelashes with lid wipes before putting on your lenses.

Dry Eyes and Styes

What causes dry eyes and styes?

Meibomitis

70% of dry eyes result from meibomitis, or blocked oil glands. Eye drops do not cure dry eyes

The tear film consists of water and oil, with the oil preventing evaporation. Lubricating eye drops don't cure dry eyes; treatment is needed to restore the oil layer. The meibomian glands produce this oil, but excessive dryness can cause overproduction, leading to blocked glands (meibomitis) and potentially styes if untreated.

Suggestion to prevent meibomitis
