What is an Ortho-Keratology (OK) lens?

How does Ortho-K lens work so you don’t need glasses or contacts in the day time

Orthokeratology involves specially designed rigid contact lenses worn overnight.

These lenses gently reshape the cornea while the child sleeps so that they can see clearly during the day without glasses.

Ortho-K lenses also help slow myopia progression by altering how light focuses on the retina. Studies show orthokeratology can slow myopia progression by around 50% compared with regular glasses. At Dr Cheryl Lee’s Eye Clinic, we do a combination therapy which is able to control more than 50%.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) for Myopia Control in Children

Orthokeratology, commonly called Ortho-K, is a specialized contact lens treatment designed to correct vision and help slow the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in children.

Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight while sleeping. During sleep, the lenses gently reshape the front surface of the eye so that children can see clearly during the day without glasses or contact lenses.

In addition to improving daytime vision, orthokeratology has been shown to slow the progression of myopia in many children, making it an important option for myopia control.

What Is Orthokeratology?

Orthokeratology uses specially designed rigid gas-permeable contact lenses worn overnight.

These lenses temporarily reshape the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye). When the lenses are removed in the morning, the new shape allows light to focus properly on the retina, improving vision during the day.

Because the effect is temporary, the lenses must be worn regularly at night to maintain clear vision.

How Ortho-K Helps Slow Myopia Progression

Myopia progresses when the eye grows longer over time. This elongation causes light entering the eye to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

Orthokeratology lenses change how light focuses on the peripheral retina. This altered focusing pattern is believed to help slow the elongation of the eye, which can reduce the rate of myopia progression.

Clinical studies have reported that orthokeratology may slow myopia progression in children by around 40–60% compared with regular glasses.

Who Is Suitable for Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology may be suitable for:

  • Children with progressive myopia

  • Children who want freedom from glasses during the day

  • Active children who play sports

  • Children whose myopia is increasing each year

A detailed eye examination is necessary to determine whether Ortho-K is appropriate for your child.

Benefits of Orthokeratology

Many families choose Ortho-K because it provides both vision correction and myopia control.

Benefits include:

  • Clear daytime vision without glasses

  • Potential slowing of myopia progression

  • Suitable for active children and sports

  • Non-surgical and reversible treatment

If lenses are discontinued, the cornea gradually returns to its original shape.

Do not wait till your child is “older’ and when he can manage lenses. OK lenses is used primarily to control myopia so shodul be started as soon as your child is ready . Come for a fitting trial session to try. OK lens is not just about not wearing glasses which is a common mistake I notice.

Is Ortho-K Safe for Children?

When properly fitted and monitored by an experienced eye care professional, orthokeratology is generally considered safe for children.

Good hygiene and proper lens care are essential to minimize the risk of eye infection. Children using Ortho-K lenses should attend regular follow-up visits to ensure that the lenses remain safe and effective.

Parents are usually involved in helping younger children manage lens care and hygiene routines.

Dr Cheryl Lee will supervise your child’s myopia control and Ok lens hygiene and use. This is a doctor-led clinic.

What to Expect During Ortho-K Treatment

The orthokeratology process typically involves several steps:

Initial consultation

A detailed eye examination and measurements of the cornea are performed.

Lens fitting

Specially designed lenses are selected based on the child’s eye shape and prescription.

Overnight wear

The lenses are worn during sleep and removed in the morning.

Follow-up visits

Regular check-ups are important to monitor vision and ensure proper lens fit. Very important at The Eye Clinic is that the myopia is well controlled.

Because each child’s eyes are unique, lenses are customized for the individual patient.

Ortho-K vs Other Myopia Control Treatments

Orthokeratology is one of several treatments used to slow myopia progression.

Specialized lens can also be used always with atropine eye drops for children who do not mind wearing glasses.

In some cases, doctors may recommend combining treatments for additional control.

Lifestyle Habits That Support Myopia Control

Along with medical treatments such as Ortho-K, certain lifestyle habits will support eye health. Dr Cheryl Lee is a big advocate of good eye habits.

These include:

  • Spending more time outdoors

  • Taking regular breaks from screens and near work

  • Maintaining regular eye examinations

These habits may help reduce the risk of myopia progression.

When Should Children Start Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology is often considered for children whose myopia is increasing each year, especially during the primary school years when eye growth is most rapid.

Early intervention may help reduce the risk of developing high myopia later in life.

An eye examination can determine whether orthokeratology is appropriate for your child.

Frequently Asked Questions About Ortho-K

Does Ortho-K permanently cure myopia?

No. Orthokeratology temporarily reshapes the cornea to improve vision. The effect reverses if lenses are no longer worn.

Can children play sports with Ortho-K?

Yes. Because the lenses are worn overnight, children can enjoy clear vision during the day without glasses.

Is Ortho-K painful?

Most children adapt quickly to the lenses and feel comfortable wearing them overnight.

How long do Ortho-K lenses last?

Lenses typically need to be replaced periodically depending on wear and lens condition. About once a year.

The Eye Clinic by Dr Cheryl Lee is a doctor-supervised contact lens clinic in Singapore specialising in myopia control for children and teenagers. We are the only clinic where Ortho-K lenses are prescribed as part of a strict, doctor-led myopia management programme — focused on slowing myopia progression while protecting your child’s long-term eye health.

Children wearing OK lenses are closely monitored for eye safety, lens fit, and early signs of dry eye or inflammation. We place strong emphasis on strict hygiene, as dirty eyelashes are one of the most common and preventable causes of contact lens–related infections in children. Keeping eyelids and lashes clean also supports tear film stability, helping to reduce dryness, redness, and lens discomfort.
